The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
